About Our Organization

The Council is comprised of more than 50 representatives from local government, public and private schools, businesses, media, faith and other ethnic communities, as well as a cross section of various races, ages, physical abilities, and sexual orientations. The purpose of the Council is to foster an inclusive community through education and communication initiatives.

We are a volunteer organization, whose work focuses on educating ourselves and the community on the diverse individuals, cultures, religions, and governments who make up our community. Through education, we have a better understanding and acceptance of others. We choose to celebrate the differences that make our community stronger.

The Council holds a general membership meeting on the second Thursday of every other month, at 7:30 pm via Zoom. Information on the next meeting's guest speaker can be found on the Programs and Events page.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast

Our signature event held since 2001 is a community breakfast to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and the enduring principles behind his work. Notable speakers share stories and inspiration as the community comes together on a day of remembrance. Sponsorships are available for this event.

Annual Meeting

The CWDC Annual Meeting, typically held in the spring, provides updates on the various committees’ activities, and includes a program on a diversity-related topic. Election of officers and approval of amendments to the CWDC governance documents also take place at the Annual Meeting.

Scholarship Program

Each year, a scholarship is awarded to a graduating Centerville High School senior for tuition and expenses at Sinclair Community College. Applicants come from diverse backgrounds and must demonstrate a financial need and be in good standing in the Centerville-Washington Township community.

Preschool Diversity Books

With generous sponsorship from Dayton Children’s, every preschool in Centerville and Washington Township receives 2-3 new books with diversity-related topics each year. Book titles are hand selected by Centerville City Schools Curriculum staff.

Is there a membership fee to belong?

No, membership is FREE and open to anyone who resides in or whose organization has a presence in Centerville and Washington Township.

What are the benefits of membership?

Upon joining the CWDC, you will be placed on the mailing list to be informed of the Council's activities, along with other community events surrounding diversity. You are provided opportunities to participate in CWDC activities such as sharing information with others at our booth at community festivals/events or serving on a committee to help further our activities.

Will the Diversity Council support a political cause?

Although we are not an advocacy organization, we welcome new program topics to broaden awareness and education about an issue. We just cannot support any political campaign or office.

How can I help further the mission, purpose, and activities of the CWDC?

Join a committee! CWDC is an all-volunteer organization and our success is dependent on people working together to organize programs, share information, educate others, and promote the Council's activities. Where can you help?
